How to Tell Whether a Customer Opened Your Proposal

The most reliable way to know whether a customer engaged is to share a secure hosted proposal link that records meaningful page activity. An email-open pixel is less reliable, and a downloaded PDF cannot be tracked after it leaves the platform.

Distinguish delivery, previews and meaningful views

Security scanners and messaging apps may open links automatically. A responsible tracking system filters known automated previews and avoids identifying an unknown visitor without verification.

Look for stronger intent signals

A question, revision request, verified acceptance or decline is more useful than a simple open. These actions explain what the customer needs next.

  • Question submitted
  • Changes requested
  • Still-reviewing timing
  • Verified accept or decline
  • Coworker invitation

Do not overstate what tracking knows

A viewed status does not prove the customer read every section or agrees with the proposal. Use it as context for a respectful follow-up, not as surveillance evidence.
